Bruxism

Bruxism – or teeth grinding – is a common but frustrating condition. Over a prolonged period of time, chronic grinding and clenching can cause jaw pain, making it difficult to open your mouth fully and even leading to migraines. Bruxism can also erode the teeth, and interfere with your sleep, creating problems in your day to day life.

However, there are some easy ways to treat bruxism. We have found mouth guards to be an effective way to treat and ease the effects of night time grinding, while also protecting your teeth from further damage. Mouth guards are easy to maintain, and offer a long-lasting solution to chronic bruxism.

To prevent ongoing problems with teeth grinding, sufferers should:

  • Reduce stress in your daily life
  • Cut back on alcohol
  • Quit smoking
  • Prioritise rest and relaxation before sleep
  • Avoid using recreational drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy.

All of these activities can make teeth grinding worse, by making it harder for your body to relax and power down overnight. For many people, stress is a major cause of bruxism, and it is important to address the root causes of any stress or anxiety before trying to self-diagnose.

At Monteiro Dental Clinic, we recommend regular dental check-ups so that we can catch any potential problems associated with teeth grinding, and work to reduce and prevent any further damage.
